Orthodontist Emergency Care
Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but they can happen. Whether it’s a broken bracket, poking wire, or a direct injury to the mouth, knowing how to respond can help you stay comfortable until professional care is available.
At Grey Orthodontics, we’re here to guide you through any issues that arise during treatment. Most braces-related problems are not true emergencies, but they do require attention. We’ve outlined common situations below and what you can do before visiting our office.
Common Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Braces and other orthodontic appliances are durable, but they can become loose, bent, or broken from time to time. If something doesn’t feel right, call our office during patient hours so we can schedule a repair. Please note that walk-in emergency visits are not available, as we want to respect scheduled patient time.
Here are some quick tips you can try at home:
Irritating Tie Wire:
If a tie wire is poking or irritating the inside of your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently push it down with a pencil eraser or Q-tip.Loose Band or Bracket:
A loose bracket or band can typically stay in place until your appointment. Call us during office hours to schedule a time for repair.Broken or Poking Archwire:
If a wire is poking you, try bending it in with a pencil eraser or trimming the end with clean nail clippers. If discomfort continues, give us a call.
When in doubt, don’t try to force or remove any part of your appliance. Contact us for guidance to avoid making the issue worse.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
If you experience a blow to the mouth or face, whether or not you’re in orthodontic treatment, act quickly:
What to do:
Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling.
Contact your general dentist as soon as possible for evaluation—especially if a tooth is loose, knocked out, or fractured.
An x-ray may be needed to determine the extent of the injury.
Once your dentist has addressed the injury, call our office if your orthodontic appliances have been displaced, loosened, or broken. We’ll work with you to replace or adjust them depending on your comfort level.
